IRCC has decided to delay the opening of its 2020 Parents and Grandparents Program due to Coronavirus pandemic. Last year, some 100,000 Canadians expressed their interest in sponsoring a parent or grandparent even though there were only 21,000 permanent residence spots available.
Similarly, Canada is targeting the admissions of 21,000 immigrants under the PGP each year through its 2020-2022 Immigration Levels Plan.
Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents over the age of 18 to sponsor their parents and/or grandparents for Canadian permanent residence.
The first invitations were issued on 24 April 2019 – Interested sponsors who receive an invitation from IRCC will have 60 days from the date of their invitation to submit a complete sponsorship application.
Interested sponsors who receive an invitation to apply must submit two complete applications — the application to become a sponsor and the application from their parents or grandparents for Canadian permanent residence.
